60MW Towers always gets positive feedback about the beginning section of the ABC of gaming shows, where the guys chat about their personal lives and are not afraid to open up their feelings to the listeners.

With that in mind, here is of another branch in the ABC series: ABC of Fording Ahead (this is the 4th show in this series).

In these shows Ben, Chris and Alan (see what they did there, still keeping the host initials despite a slight change in the staff rota for this particular series) chat openly about their lives (both past and present) and how they try and stay positive, despite the inevitable ups and downs of life.

Show notes:

1. Don’t feed the trolls; don’t let people live rent-free in your head. We spent a lot of time discussing this. You have the choice to keep reliving conversations or actions of others in your head or you can let it go. When you keep mentally fixated on thoughts that anger or upset you, it’s only hurting YOU! The other person likely has not given it a second thought. They are going about their business, while you spiral into negativity. Let it go! Engaging in conversation, especially on social media, can be fun, but more often than not, it can create irritation. If you find yourself engaged in a conversation going nowhere, abandon it and forget it. Don’t feed the trolls!

2. There’s strong evidence that acts of kindness don’t just make others happy; they make you feel good as well. Even just taking a moment to do someone a small favor or randomly sending a text message can put you in a better frame of mind, breaking you out of negative thinking. If you get into a habit of doing something compassionate for another person every time you’re feeling down, anxious or hopeless, it’ll soon become automatic and your negative periods will last for increasingly shorter times.

3. One of the best ways to train your brain to stay positive is to find something you love to do, such as a sport, hobby or pursuit. Whenever your thoughts are focused on your own personal joy, you’ll strengthen the associated neural pathways in your brain and will find more to be joyful about as a result.

4. “Run a mile a day, read a book a week; Strengthen the mind, strengthen the body.” If you want to be a better positive thinker, take an honest critical look at how you treat your body and identify potential areas for improvement. Diet, exercise and overall fitness plays a huge factor in your overall mental health. It doesn’t have to be anything radical. Start by just moving more, maybe a walk or some basic pushups and get to a point where you are more active today than you have been. Part of your health is also your spiritual health (whether it’s religion, or Gaia, or karma or whatever is in your inner core), you need to have that third leg to keep you upright.

5. Show me your friends and I’ll show you who you are. If you are having a hard time staying positive, see if you have surrounded yourself with a roomful of downers. You tend to act like those you hang around with, so choose your circle carefully. This isn’t to say you abandon those who need you. However, if you are struggling with positivity, it becomes much harder for you to be able to help him or her through their issues.

6. When you lay down at night, take a moment and consciously recall at least three individual things that went well for you that day. These do not need to be big. In fact, it’s more important to remind yourself of the small positives. Maybe you hit all of the traffic lights on the way home. Maybe your dog made you laugh. Perhaps a family member randomly said they loved you. Whatever it is, force yourself to recall those three moments from your day. The more you do this, the more it will become automatic. Soon, you’ll be noticing the really good things happening around you all the time and you won’t ignore them. Once you see you are surrounded by positives, when you are dealing with a negative, it no longer seems overwhelming.
