A discussion around urban sprawl in Calgary and its effect on biodiversity and people
Urban sprawl is a topic that frequently discussed in Calgary. The increase in the size of the city is correlated with the expansion of its population, which allowed it to be considered as an affordable place to by a house compared to other Canadian cities such as Toronto or Vancouver. However, the cost to the natural areas surrounding the city and ecological risks of this strategy, who were highlighted since at least the 70s, cannot be ignored anymore and are in contradiction with the climate emergency declared in 2021.
This miniseries will discuss the question of urban sprawl and its effect on people, biodiversity and cultural heritage through interviews with different subject matter experts. The objective is to discuss why sprawl seems to be the only policy in response to growth in Calgary and its consequences in the long term. The goal is that the elements discussed can be used in future discussions about urban sprawl in the city.
