Violist Frances Debroff is packing for Paris leaving her home town May 1 where she played countless concerts in the pit of the Benedum Center for the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet. She remembers Andre Previn, Lorin Maazel, William and Eleanor Benswanger, and the many musicians she’s worked with at the St Bart’s Music Festival which she founded over 35 years ago. Frances served as a board member of many arts organizations including service as chair for Chamber Music Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Association and Pittsburgh Youth Symphony where she worked closely with Marie and Lincoln Maazel as a former member of the Youth Symphony. Frances remembers her father’s close association with violinist Nathan Milstein and her connection to Duquesne University where a scholarship exists in her name. Daughter Jill chimes in at the end of the conversation and Frances fill us in on her son too. She talks about two recordings she made with musicians who’ve appeared at the festival on the island including St Bart’s Style and Stravinsky’s L’histoire de Soldat.
