Juke In The BackMatt The Cat
The Soul That Came Before Rock n' Roll
At the end of the Second World War, economics forced the big bands to trim their once great size and thus, the Jump Blues combo was born. Between 1946-1954, rhythm and blues laid the tracks for what was to become Rock n’ Roll. So how come, 75 years later, this vibrant and influential music is still so unknown to so many?
Matt The Cat is going to change that with the radio program, “Juke In The Back.” These were the records that you couldn’t hear on the jukebox in the front of the establishment. To hear all this great 1950s rhythm & blues, you had to go to “Juke In The Back.”

Living in Hi-FiFlissy & Steve
Living in Hi-Fi is a podcast about records, released every Monday. Like many record collections, ours has come together from various places: some vinyl we inherited from family, some we sought out and bought on purpose, but most of our records we fished out of dollar bins at thrift stores or dug out from deep in the crates at record stores. We love music so much that we’ll buy just about anything that looks interesting. We’ve discovered a lot of really awesome music that way and we want to share our discoveries.
Some of the artists we’ve found have been forgotten about (if they were ever recognized in the first place!) and we think they deserve to be remembered and honored, or at least listened to.
We feature some of our favorites: easy listening music from the 1950s and 1960s like exotica and bossa nova, as well as some oddball finds and world music from all over.
Each episode, we’ll share the story behind the record we’ve chosen, a bit of history about the artist, and some highlights of the recording. Make sure to check out the show notes for each episode for more about the artist and where you can purchase the music we feature.

Mind the Brain !
Mind the Brain 2010: What do the new brain sciences do (or not) to/for their own disciplinary framework – both from a theoretical and practical standpoint ? How does the question of interdisciplinarity (or call it trans-, co-, etc. disciplinarity) emerge (or not) in relation to their own research or clinical practice ?
Mind the Brain 2011: These days we can observe a tendency towards modulating the psyche through actions on the brain, thereby reshaping identities. Psychotropic drugs are the favoured levers of these actions. Since the 1950s, neuroleptics, antidepressants, anxiolytics and psychostimulants are prescribed, sold and consumed in order to palliate mental suffering or treat mental illness. Does the success of these substances show the effectiveness of the treatment of recurrent and universal disorders or, conversely, does it reflect a specific design of psychological ailments and their treatment methods in contemporary society? In either case, the development of psychotropic drugs highlights the physiological and metabolic dimension of the modulation of the subject, as governed by a "chemical brain". For its fourth edition, the symposium Mind the Brain 2011 combines several perspectives to take a look at this chemical conception of the brain. As in previous editions, the symposium privileges work and reflections focusing on fields of tension or collaboration between basic research, the medical clinic and the human and social sciences.
