Ce dessin animé peu connu a été imaginé par Igor et Grichka Bogdanoff ! Il a été produit par le studio français Belokapi (La Noiraude, Plume d’Elan) dont ce fut la première production TV au format long (52 x 13 min). D’abord diffusée de façon confidentielle sur Canal+ en novembre 1985, Robo Story connaît ensuite une plus large audience lorsque la série arrive sur TF1 en janvier 1987 dans l’émission Vitamine. Son générique est interprété par une certaine Marie-Pierre, un visage familier de la chaîne à cette époque…
