Les minimums solaires de 2009 et 2020 ont été caractérisés par des intensités record de rayons cosmiques galactiques (GCR). Les intensités de GCR dans la gamme d'énergie de 70–450 MeV/nucléon étaient notamment de 20% à 26% plus élevées à la fin de 2009 que dans le minimum précédent de 1997–1998, ainsi que tous les minima solaires précédents entre 1957 et 1997. Mais contrairement aux tendances des décennies précédentes, dans lesquelles l'intensité des "rayons cosmiques anormaux" (les ACR), qui sont eux liés au système solaire, et celle des GCR (provenant d'au delà du système solaire), concordaient fortement, cette fois les intensités des ACR n'ont pas atteint des niveaux record aussi élevés. Trois chercheurs se penchent sur cette étrangeté et prouvent la validité d'une solution théorique qui avait été proposée il y a 13 ans pour l'expliquer. Ils publient leur étude dans The Astrophysical Journal.
