Maria, Marc, and Luke have traversed the Atlantic in a sailboat guided by Sam and John, and now, on the skyline, is the burnt-out husk of Boston, now called "Borderton." The party is shocked to see what a modern city looks like in the age post-Breaking. But most shocking of all are the actions of the people still alive there...

Meanwhile, Marc, Luke, and Maria stray from their parents to try and find the lost coydog, and are caught out as vulnerable as they ever have been. The road ahead lies across the ocean.
