Throughout the mid-nineties as proto-grunge, radio-friendly Nirvana knockoffs were signing record deals like they were going out of style, Sloan took the road less traveled after signing with Geffen Records, even in the face of mounting pressure from the label to stay on that grungy, noise rock course. A second full-length album found the group heading in a more refined pop sound, a world away from the washed-out fuzz of their previous releases. Despite having been swept under the rug by Geffen, Sloan refused to bow down to the major label's demands, and have continued to remain steadfast and true to their unique brand of indie pop even after all these years.
