Tous les dix ans, les réacteurs nucléaires français doivent passer une visite décennale, une VD, un "contrôle technique" comme sur les voitures. Pour une centrale, c'est un moment décisif. C'est en effet à ce moment que l'ASN, l'autorité de sureté nucléaire donne son autorisation pour que la centrale continue de fonctionner pour les dix ans qui viennent, ou pas. Pour les réacteurs vieillissants du parc français et donc pour l'industrie nucléaire dans sa globalité, cette VD4 qui se profile va décider de l'avenir du nucléaire en France.
