Le 26 décembre 1991, on apprend la dissolution de l’URSS. Clermont-Ferrand est de ces villes de France dont nombre de rues, places et équipements publics furent nommés en son hommage et dont le bâti depuis la dernière guerre reflète le mieux les austères parti-pris formels. Un architecte parisien doit venir y séjourner ; on sait de lui qu’il a passé son enfance dans la préfecture auvergnate. L’homme doit y participer au concours organisé pour la conception du nouveau palais de justice. Pendant les semaines qu’il y passera, solitaire la plupart du temps, entre sa chambre d’hôtel deux étoiles, ses déambulations dans la ville transie de froid et quelques réunions avec les commanditaires du marché public, il consignera ses réflexions dans un journal : elles constituent l’essentiel des 300 pages de L’architecture.
