Les travaux de recherche de la Pr Anne Fagot-Largeault portent sur des thèmes d'histoire et de philosophie des sciences du vivant, abordés sous l'angle théorique (épistémologie, ontologie biologique) ou pratique (éthique). Ils ont suivi trois directions principales: (1) raisonnement diagnostique, logique inductive, statistique et probabilités, procédures heuristiques; (2) investigation des liens de causalité, preuves de causalité, explication causale, évolution et ontologie du devenir; (3) éthique et connaissance, méthodologie de la recherche clinique, éthique de l'investigation bio-médicale, épistémologie biologique, anthropologie bio-médicale. Les recherches sur la logique des raisonnements médicaux et sur la nature des explications causales ont pris naissance en relation avec le programme de logique et philosophie des sciences de l'université de Stanford, et se sont développées grâce à une pratique hospitalière de médecin psychiatre attaché, aux urgences. La réflexion morale a été enrichie et mise à l'épreuve par l'expérience de divers Data and Safety Monitoring Committees (veille sur des essais cliniques effectués sur des malades du sida ou du cancer), et par une participation de huit années (1990-1998) aux travaux du Comité Consultatif National d'Ethique français. The research of Prof. Anne Fagot-Largeault, centers on the philosophy of life sciences, developed along three lines: (1) diagnostic reasoning, inductive logic, statistical and probabilistic methods, heuristic procedures; (2) investigation of causal links, validation of causal hypotheses, causal explanation, evolution and the ontology of becoming; (3) ethics of medical practice and investigation, methodology of clinical & of epidemiological research, epistemology of bio-medical sciences, bio-medical anthropology. Her list of publications counts around 250 titles, including a dozen of books, among which: Médecine et probabilités, Paris: Didier-érudition, 1982; L'homme bio-éthique.
